Where was running giant chainsaw to cut up a ship full of cars on career day?

Offshore is where you want to be for creative solutions to weird ass problems. It’s not boring...

Wow.  That’s quite the project.  I’m surprised they can get enough speed with the setup shown in the animation to cut through a steel hulled ship.

The cutting cable doesn’t look like it’s traveling that fast due to the size of the cutting  bits.If you jump to the 7 min mark

That amazes me.  Thanks!

C onceptu ally , it ’s much like a diamond wire saw we’d use subsea, just in chain form. A wire saw is a balance of feed rate, tool rpm, w ir e tension, as well as wire de si gn (bead shape, beads per meter - bpm, and bead attachment type). then add in what you’re cutting through - material, thickness, hollow/solid, etc . This being huge scale, the chain won’t get nearly to a wire velocity (~20m/sec is pretty norm) . I’d guess well under 1m/sec (0.1-0.3?? ). The chain tension will be huge, s o they can cut a a very slow speed (chain velocity) and feed rate (cut speed) . I imagine the first few days will be very slow in general as the learning curve will be steep. Each cut is going to take a long time and if they part they chain (odds are they will at le ast once ), downtime will be pretty length y .

The video gmporschenut posted said about 1m per second for the speed which is faster than I would have guessed.  Cool concept, I’d love to get to work on problems like that.

The article said each cut will take 24 hours and will not be able to stop.

The marine industry in general is fun. You’re taking all sorts of stuff that people don’t normally think of as being mobile - bedrooms, ba th rooms, cafeterias, gas stations, power plants, etc. - and making them move. Not only that, you’re moving them through unpredictable environments, a variety of temperatures, etc. And they have to be safe and reliable to the nth degree because there’s no fire department to call, or floating Home Depot to get parts from.

What I get for not watching the vid... Just like a DWS, if it binds up, the wire (chain) is toast as is your cut. C ontingencies in offshore ops are a necessity of life. VB knows their stuff though. Be interesting to see how well it  goes.

Again, should have watched the vid app ar ently. Bit faster than I would assume as well. Maybe 0.5m/s max, but I’m no expert at it. Hell of a lot bigger than anything I’ve been involved with cutting lol.

I guess I never considered how they might cut things of that scale apart underwater , but had someone asked, a gantry operated chain saw (or whatever the right descriptor is) would not have come to mind!

That looked really expensive.

Engineering FTW.  Super cool video. Thanks.

This is the same way the Russian sub Kursk was cut up, only it was more complex because she was sitting on the bottom 320ft down.
